Kliklok shows NEW
carton closer at Gulfood
At
the forthcoming Gulfood Exhibition in Dubai (27th Feb to 2nd March – Stand
S1-F29) Kliklok will be demonstrating their new carton closer, the
SMART-3.
This compact machine
is ideal for automatic hot-melt sealing of hinge-cover, 3-flap cartons at
speeds of up to 120 cartons per minute, offering an economical,
space-saving solution. The innovative in-line carton pivot turning bed
ensures simple and reliable carton handling in minimum length.
A simplified lugless design eliminates carton-carrying lugs, driven
chains, mechanical transfers and timing flaps. Instead, reliable VFD
motors directly drive durable, easy replaceable high-friction belts to
quietly convey cartons through the machine to effectively reduce any
carton marking and product damage.
The carton size range of the Smart-3 size is generous, to cater for a wide
range of applications, offering maximum flexibility. The Smart-3 can be
customised to suit numerous carton styles, including ‘Hood cover’ and
‘Scallop edged’ cartons.
Automatic programme set-up and a simple mechanical hand-wheel with digital
indicators make size change achievable in less than ten minutes – a quick
and easy changeover, with minimal downtime. The Smart-3 closer is equipped
with a Panelview Plus 700 colour touch screen, with icon- based controls
for ease of operation, fault diagnosis & speed adjustment.

CeDo
wins again with Sainsbury’s
Europe's market leader in household disposables, CeDo, has won its
second major supplier award this year from the supermarket retailer
Sainsbury’s.
The supplier award for “Quality Performance” now takes pride of place in
CeDo’s trophy cabinet alongside the award for “Best Product Launch” which
CeDo won in April 2010, for the successful relaunch of the wraps & liners
category.
CeDo worked closely with Sainsbury’s during every step of the process in
re-envisioning and redesigning the entire bin liner, refuse sacks and food
contact products such as food bags, cling film and foil. As part of this
process, Sainsbury’s technologist visited and carried out manufacturing
audits at CeDo factories in China, Telford & Poland, in order for
Sainsbury’s to satisfy itself, not only on the excellence of the
relaunched products, but also on the robustness and quality of CeDo’s
manufacturing systems worldwide.
CeDo succeeded in its aims to supply Sainsbury’s with improved products
which can be used as part of Sainsbury’s “switch and save” campaign.
Alan Condie, CeDo’s business unit controller reflects that this years
Sainsbury’s accolades have reminded CeDo of its ongoing strengths and
responsibilities in relation to manufacturing, packaging and the shared
duty of care of both companies towards the environment.
It is CeDo’s market intent to encourage closed loop recycling schemes for
the benefit of customers. In the case of CeDo’s EcoMin disposable bags,
the bulk of CeDo’s post-use plastics is predominantly sourced from CeDo’s
own recycling plant in Geleen in the Netherlands which converts some
40,000 tonnes of Europe’s agricultural silage wrap into second-life
plastics. The plant is certified to EN15343, with full audit traceability
of feedstock and is the only one of its kind in Europe.
CeDo currently supplies some 22,000 tonnes of recycled household
disposable items into the UK retail sector and a significant proportion of
this tonnage is set to be made up of chalk, which has a low carbon
footprint.
The net result of these material sourcing decisions and CeDo’s commitment
to recycling means that the carbon footprint of CeDo’s EcoMin bags
continues to drive down the carbon footprint of their polythene based
products.

National Flexible Introduces Gravure Quality Flexo To UK Market
National
Flexible, the Bradford-based film packaging specialists, have become the
very first in the UK packaging industry to take advantage of a
ground-breaking advance in printing technology for Dr Organics’ range of
soap bars.
The three flow-wrap designs were printed using Kodak’s innovative Flexcel
NX technology which, when used alongside their Digicap screening process,
enhances the quality of image reproduction to such an extent that it
allows flexo plates to reproduce detail to the same standard as that of
gravure cylinders.
Dr Organics’ highly detailed packaging artwork required the very best
quality print to ensure that their flow-wrap packs had strong stand-out
shelf appeal, as well as matching exactly to the existing colour palette
of other packaging formats within the range.
National Flexible worked on the project in conjunction with partners Kodak
and Reproflex3.
“We’re proud to have successfully mastered the process which will allow us
to fill a gap in the market for an end-to-end system which produces high
quality print without the prohibitive costs associated with commissioning
expensive gravure cylinders,” said National Flexible’s Print Manager –
Dave Daniels.
Pioneered by Kodak, the Flexcel NX system not only allows for true 1:1
image reproduction, improved fine detail, excellent ink transfer and
stronger colour density – but it also offers long-term cost savings versus
conventional printing.

Sirane
pushes forward with Sira Crisp™
Europe’s premier packaging solutions company, Sirane Ltd, is reporting
a seasonal surge in demand for its Crisp It™ and Sira Crisp™ packaging
products as the Christmas season advances and the international trade in
packaging materials intensifies.
Jeremy Haydn-Davies, Sirane Sales Director for Food Packaging says that
‘the European food and packaging sector is currently experiencing
something of a materials supply squeeze as international polyester film
stocks for one are mainly heading to the Far East for use and consumption.
However, here at Sirane, we are very well equipped with microwave boards,
susceptor films, and paper materials in order to service this expected
seasonal jump in demand for our Crisp It ™ and Sira Crisp ™ products.”
Sirane’s radical Crisp It ™ form of packaging was first developed some
three years ago for use in the fast food industry – primarily for crisping
burgers, potatoes and other hot food via the means of susceptor film
packaging in the food packaging. A number of next generation products have
since been developed and the packaging technology has found particular
favour for its lightweight nature, low unit cost and popularity in mobile
food service.
At the beginning of the year Sirane’s Sira Crisp ™ won a number of prime
bulk orders from leading train and airline operators in the UK and abroad
– for these factors – and for the specifics of its cook-in performance
abilities. ‘The Sira Crisp ™ film can be made into carry bags for chips
and French Fries and potato wedge wraps; as well as pouches for popcorn
and as wraps for the cooking of paninis and sandwiches. For frozen foods
destined for the microwave, there is no longer a need to package into
boxes. The current cold weather is seeing an expansion in these uses –
together with the convenience factor. The needs of the Christmas season
are also adding to the mix
Sirane’s Crisp It™ packaging is based on an integrated two layer film that
can be shaped into more or less any kind of package to suit the
microwaveable cooking application of the food. Originally developed by
Sirane as a food crisping susceptor film for the insides of burger boxes
and other fast food items, the latest version – Sira Crisp ™ represents a
quantum leap in design.
Sirane`s traditional strength has been to successfully laminate susceptor
films to board and paper without the use of adhesives, making the product
much more versatile in performance and more environmentally friendly.
Sirane has taken the concept one stage further by combining, again without
glue, a clear film to the susceptor film and creating a strong bi-laminate
which is ideal for crisping up paninis, baguettes and pasties and other
foods. In the microwave oven the film clings to the food, thus making it
crisp.
Available in various formats such as sleeves, the film can also be used to
flow-wrap foodstuffs, so eliminating the need for additional outer
packaging. Sirane’s new formula means that direct printing onto the film
is easy - thus removing the need for a label. ‘It’s what the food service
market needs,’ says Haydn-Davies; ‘lightweight and functional and ideal
for busy take-aways, airlines and food-to-go outlets. Great also for fast
food needs in the office or home, too.’

Natural
snacks packed in high barrier Natureflex™ film
Innovia
Films’ high barrier compostable cellulose-based material, NatureFlex™ NK,
has been chosen by organic food wholesaler, Infinity Foods, to wrap its
range of snack packs.
Transparent NatureFlex™ NK was launched in 2008 and offers not only
compostability, but also a moisture barrier approaching that of
co-extruded OPP. This means it has the best moisture barrier of any
transparent single layer biopolymer film currently available, which has
been achieved through Innovia Films’ unique coating technology.
Based in East Sussex, Infinity Foods has been owned and operated as a
workers’ co-operative for over 30 years and is one of the UK's leading
wholesale distributors of organic and natural foods.
Outlining why Infinity Foods chose NatureFlex™ to wrap its snack pack
range, Kieran Gorman, stated, “At Infinity Foods we are always looking for
ways to limit our environmental impact and carbon footprint. For example,
our catalogues are printed on paper from sustainable forests using no
chlorine in manufacture and some of our transport fleet runs on
bio-diesel. So opting for a film such as NatureFlex™ is a logical
progression for us. Our products are available across the UK and Ireland
and can be found at specialist retailers across Europe and as far a field
as Asia. We are currently only packing our new snack packs in NatureFlex™
but are looking to start using the film across the whole range.”
For the creation of the pack design, Infinity Foods collaborated with
packaging consultant, Andy Skinner of Aboxhigh, who said:
“Having supplied Infinity Foods for over 15 years and being fully aware of
the company’s ethos on the environment, NatureFlex™ has filled the void we
have been waiting for. NatureFlex™ is one of the most exciting products I
have been involved in within my 35 years experience in the packaging
industry. The high visual shelf appeal of the packs, coupled with
sustainability and reduction in carbon footprint fulfills all the criteria
that Infinity Foods require.”
The resulting pack has helped to re-brand the range of handy size snack
products including Organic Milk Chocolate Buttons, Organic High Energy
Trail Mix and Hot Chilli Cashew Nuts. The NatureFlex™ NK used in this
application is 45µm thick and is flexo printed by Modern Packaging.
NatureFlex™ was an obvious solution for the packaging in this application
as the film begins life as a natural product – wood - and breaks down at
the end of its lifecycle in a home compost bin (or industrial compost
environment) within a matter of weeks. It also offers advantages for
packing and converting such as inherent deadfold and anti-static
properties, high gloss and transparency, resistance to grease and oil,
good barrier to gases and aromas, print receptive surface and a wide
heat-seal range.
NatureFlex™ films are certified to meet both the European EN13432 and
American ASTM D6400 standards for compostable packaging. The wood-pulp is
sourced from managed plantations from referenced suppliers operating Good
Forestry principals (FSC or equivalent). NatureFlex™ films typically have
a renewable biobased content of some 95% by weight of material.

Extended Shelf Life
for Fresh-cut Produce
Hefestus,
Israel, introduces its innovative packaging solution with SLB™ – Shelf
Life Booster — for extending fruit and vegetable shelf life, at Fruit
Logistica, Berlin, Hall 7.2.c Booth # A-03. Visitors are invited to
experience a comprehensive solution for extended shelf life of fruits,
vegetables and fresh-cut salads.
The major obstacle to purchasing ready-to-eat, fresh-cut fruits and
vegetables is their typically short shelf life, responsible for quick
degeneration and decomposition of the product, not to mention undesirable
appearance and negative palatability. SLB™ technology overcomes this
challenge by extending shelf life beyond standard packaging and reducing
accumulation of product decomposition liquids in the package bottom.
To achieve optimal, long-lasting shelf life, Hefestus packages pre-cut
fruits and vegetables in Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) via a new,
patented method of sealing trays called SLB™. SLB™ is the best alternative
for vacuum packaging. It extends product shelf life without using
synthetic preservatives.
Hefestus, will demonstrate a weight-controlled filling of fresh fruits and
vegetables, a rotary top sealer machine and a labelling conveyor.

Cigarette
packs travel on a cushion of air
Colin Mear Engineering Limited (CME) of Combe St Nicholas ‘near Chard’
provides a complete secondary manufacturing service to the Tobacco
Industry as well as designing and manufacturing its own cost-effective
products for cigarette making and packaging.
Over many years of working with the leading tobacco companies, CME has
accumulated substantial expertise and experience, which is regularly put
to use to solve customers' technical and operational problems
cost-effectively.
One such application is the recent design and supply of new spiral,
gravity conveyors that are required to safeguard cigarette pack quality
during product transfer. This is achieved by delivering a controllable
constant flow of air through a continuous series of holes located in the
base of the down chute to provide a protective cushion of air, which helps
to ensure the smooth and safe passage of the product.
“Initially we considered side channel blowers but when we trialled ACI’s
blower unit we found it gave us far more flexibility and control” says
Steve Hallet, one of CME’s Design Engineers. “I was also very impressed
with the Multi Stage unit’s small size for the output it provided. All in
all ACI understood my initial requirements and the solution has met all of
our needs.”
The blower supplied was an ACI 4MS11/020 Multi Stage Centrifugal unit.
These are Direct driven blowers offering quiet running and maintenance
free solutions for many higher pressure applications. They are available
in single or three phase, DC or 400Hz, and ATEX versions.

Roberts Mart's shrink packaging is making the most of cider space
Eye-catching
packaging and brand recognition are crucial in the growing cider market. A
high quality print on collation shrink film can help make bottled products
stand out on shelves, a fact not lost on a leading UK drinks company.
Recently, InterContinental Brands Ltd (ICB)
took the decision to switch from clear film to printed shrink packaging
for multi packs of its innovative range of St Helier Pear Ciders and
appointed printed flexible packaging specialist Roberts Mart & Co Ltd.
Beating off two of its competitors, Roberts
Mart won the contract to supply printed shrink packaging for ICB's 50cl
bottles and help the producer claim a larger slice of the growing
£772million off-trade market (source: Nielsen).
The distinctive film, coloured to match the
choice of raspberry, pear, blueberry, apple, cherry and blackcurrent
flavours, has initially been well received by ICB's customers, according
to operations director, Mike Carthy.
Impressed with Roberts Mart's ability to
meet a very tight deadline, he said: "We had not done anything with
printed film before and felt our packaging needed to make a bigger visual
impact on store shelves. It was a straight-forward decision to choose
Roberts Mart because not only did they tick all the boxes, but their fast
turnaround times convinced us they were right for the job."
Roberts Mart is renowned for its
sample-making facility to support fast turnaround times and has invested
heavily in the new technology required to help food and drink
manufacturers get the most out of their printed flexible packaging.
This Leeds-based family-run business,
established in 1852, is already a major player in the printed collation
shrink sector and is continually developing specialised high performance
films which deliver full operational characteristics, in terms of clarity,
gloss and strength, whilst minimising gauge.
The benefits of increased yield, with more
packs produced per kg of film, and subsequent reduction in packaging
material costs are proving very attractive to hard pressed drink
manufacturers.
In the beverages market, Roberts Mart is
providing cost-effective printing and innovative flexible packaging
solutions that safely secure packed bottles and enhance company branding
and identity. The company now counts a number of household food and drink
names among its customers and believes it has the ideal printing and
packaging solutions for the beverage industry, particularly for bottled
drinks.
